Embark on an extraordinary 13 Nights / 14 days camping adventure, the Rhino Trail, offering a unique opportunity to encounter both white and black rhinos in Botswana. Starting in the capital city of Gaborone and concluding in Maun, this safari promises an unforgettable experience in the heart of Africa’s wilderness.

Please note: Your safari official starts in Maun, Bush Rover Safaris is happy to assist with pre-arrangement of accommodation and transfer from airport to the lodge. You need to arrive a day before your safari starts the next day.

Day 1: Gaborone Sir Seretse Khama International Airport

Upon arrival, a professional guide from Bush Rover Safaris will be waiting at the airport with a board written your name. He will meet and greet you, then transfer you to the lodge where you will overnight.

Your safari starts at a comfortable lodge in Gaborone. You will have your afternoon at leisure to relax and explore Gaborone city to visit the chiefs’ monuments. Lunch and dinner at own expense.


Day 2: Transfer to Khama Rhino Sanctuary

Early morning of the day after enjoying our breakfast, the journey takes us to Khama Rhino Sanctuary.

From the capital city, drive on a paved road for 391 km, which will take approximately 3 hours to reach the camp. We will have lunch on the way before arriving at our destination. Upon arrival at the camp, the team will demonstrate how to pitch the tent. It is a good experience. As soon as we finish setting up the camp, the guide will update us on the afternoon drive.

Gaborone – Khama Rhino: 391 km / 6 hours (including stop for lunch)

Khama Rhino offers the opportunity to see both black and white rhino as well as an abundance of other wildlife species.

Day 3: Khama Rhino Sanctuary [Camping]

Early in the morning we have breakfast: coffee, tea, cereals, corn flakes, toast and porridge. As the sun rises, we will go on an early game drive around the area, then back for lunch.

Day 4: Transfer to Likhubu Island [Camping]

We take a 4 to 5 hour drive on a tarred road heading northeast. Likhubu Island is the only place on a Botswana safari with a prominent rocky feature, breathtaking views of the salt pans in the Makgadikgadi, and solitary aesthetic beauty.

Day 5: Transfer to Nxai Pan [Camping]

We have an early start this morning. Leaving after breakfast, we drive out to Nxai Pan – the salt pans. These salt pans, the world’s largest, are the remnants of a once massive inland lake. Today they offer spectacular scenery and endless horizons. In the season, many zebras occur here. The pans offer a truly unique experience as well as an opportunity to witness an unforgettable sunset.


Day 6: Nxai Pan [Camping] – Full Day

The day will be spent searching for the wide variety of wildlife and birds that this area is renowned for, while absorbing the sounds and the beauty of this region. Nxai Pan National Park covers an area of 2,100 square kilometres and comprises several larger pans. These pans are now grassed and scattered with islands of acacia trees. Pans fill with water during the rainy season. Our drives will be around these areas.

The next day we will have a chance to visit the Baines Baobabs – seven huge, gnarled baobab trees named after the 19th century explorer Thomas Baines, situated on a promontory island overlooking and surrounded by white, crusty pans.

Likhubu – Nxai Pan: 185 km / 4 hours (including lunch stop)

Day 7: Transfer to Maun [Optional Scenic Flight Over the Delta]

We have a leisurely start this morning. Transfer after breakfast, we make our way to Maun, game driving for the first couple of hours. We plan to arrive in Maun in time for onward scenic flights. While we endeavour to ensure the itinerary runs as advertised, Bush Rover Safaris reserves the right to change this due to unforeseen circumstances or external influences beyond our control.

On arrival we will drive to the camp where we will stay, arrange time for the scenic flight, and do some top-up of food and water to get ready for the next days of camping.

Nxai Pan – Maun: 173 km / 3 hours
Departure: 07h00

Day 8: Transfer to Moremi Game Reserve [Xhini, Xakanaxa] – Camping

After breakfast, your adventure continues through to Moremi Game Reserve, having lunch on our way before reaching the camp. This is one of the best wilderness areas of Botswana with very high concentrations of game. This is an excellent area for birdwatching as relatively easy vehicle access to the permanent water pools together with a good diversity of habitat allows for close sightings of many different interesting species.

Maun – Xakanaxa: 158 km / 4 hours

Day 8, 9 & 10: Moremi Game Reserve [Xhini, Xakanaxa] – Camping

The safari never stops. Hidden gem of camp perched in mopane woodland. We have an early start this morning for game drives. As the sun rises, you will wake again to the beauty of iconic Moremi experiences. After a steaming hot cup of coffee and light breakfast, you will be heading off. You will spend your day on morning and afternoon game drives looking for signatures of wildlife. We will head back to camp for lunch, shower and siesta.


Day 11, 12 & 13: Transfer to Moremi [Khwai] – Camping

Today you get to explore a section of Moremi Game Reserve that few get to experience – the best opportunity to witness this raw nature. You will also have a chance to venture out on mokoro exploration, experiencing a very different type of safari, focusing on the aquatic plants and birds.


Day 14: Transfer to Maun

Early in the morning after enjoying your breakfast, that will be a good time to get group photos. Embark on transfer to Maun as per your arrangements. It will be the end of Bush Rover Safaris arrangements. Transfer to the airport.
